Robert Hutchinson Pomeroy was born at Woodhull, Steuben county, New York, September 19, 1844, and died at Northwestern, Calif., December 19, 1921, 77 years and 3 months of age.

He emigrated to Wisconsin when he was still a boy and enlisted in Company K, 1st Wisconsin cavalry, shortly after the Civil war broke out. He was in the army of the west and served under Grant and Sherman until the end of the war. He took part in many of the great battles and escaped without a scratch.

After his discharge from the army he moved to Nebraska, landing in Dixon county September 19, 1868. He located on the southwest quarter of section 21, township 28, R 5, Springbank township, about two miles southwest of Allen. He was county commissioner for three years, '81, '82 and '83, and was county treasurer for eight years.

He also conducted a flourmill business and organized a bank and was one of the leading business men of Ponca until he retried about ten years ago. He lived at Newcastle a few years and was active in a bank at that place.

In early life he joined the Lutheran church and was an earnest and consistent christian up to the time of his death. He also was a fraternal man and was a pastmaster of the Masonic lodge and past grand of the Odd Fellows lodge, besides these he kept up his membership in the G. A. R. ever since the Civil war.

Robert Pomeroy and Agatha Chappel were married March 16, 1868, and five children were born to them, all of whom, with the exception of Mrs. Duane Bittenbender, are dead. His wife passed away about two years ago, since which time he has been patiently awaiting the end. He had often wished that he would not have a lingering illness and his wish was gratified.

About six years ago he went to Northwestern, Calif., to reside with his daughter, Mrs. Duane Bittenbender.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday noon, December 20th, at Northwestern, Chaplain G. H. Jones officiating. Members of the American Legion escorted the remains to the station. The body was buried at San Diego beside his wife and some children who had passed away before, Jeanette Fackelman, Harriet Pomeroy and James Pomeroy. Mr. and Mrs. Duane Bittenbender accompanied the body to San Diego.

Mr. Pomeroy spent several weeks last summer at Ponca, Allen and South Sioux City among relatives, near and dear friends. It was one of his greatest pleasures to be able to come to Ponca once more and meet his many old friends. He was a member of Ponca I. O. O. F. lodge, the Masonic lodge of Ponca and the Eastern Star of Ponca.

As a citizen of Dixon county and of Ponca he was highly respected by the communities in which he lived as a man of sterling character and high intelligence. His life was active and to the various occupations to which he gave his time he devoted his full energies. He was busy to the last and died in harness. On his recent visit here he seemed his old self as if the passing years with their bereavements and sorrows had but lightly touched his physical manhood. The news of his passing came as a sudden shock to our people; they know him for his work well done--a life well spent. The memory our citizens will hold in reverance the life and deeds of Robert H. Pomeroy.
