Bernice Florence Green, of Gresham, Oregon, passed away peacefully of natural causes at the Powell Valley Assisted Living Center on the afternoon of September 10, 2018, comforted by her husband and daughter. Bernice was 86 years old. She enjoyed participating in church activities wherever she lived and was always offering a helping hand to those in need, to missionaries, and to new members of the community.
She was born October 26, 1931 in Plainview, Nebraska, as the fifth child of Stanley and Elizabeth (Czarnek) Wytaske.
By 1935, their family had moved to Easton, Minnesota to set up farming operations. Her mother Elizabeth passed away in 1937, when Bernice was five years old. Her father raised his six children while farming in Minnesota. In the late 1940s, she moved with her father and younger sister, Franny, to Woodburn, Oregon, where her father ran a motel, while her older siblings remained in Minnesota with their young families.
On July 23, 1949, Bernice married Robert I. Green, who was called to serve as a U.S. Marine in the Korean War, shortly thereafter. After his return from the war and a brief stint logging in Willits, California, the family settled on a farm near Manning, Oregon, where they raised chickens and various crops. In Manning, Bernice and her family joined the Manning Gospel Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and in Vacation Bible School. She moved to N.E. Portland while her children were attending Portland Christian Schools and she was involved in Awana and other programs at Faith Baptist Church.
They later moved to Lucerne, California where she ran a home for older people. Eventually, they sold the care home and moved back to Oregon, settling in Azalea, where they maintained a large and beautiful garden. In Azalea, she served as the secretary for the Azalea Community Church, supported the welcoming committee and helped in many aspects of the church community. In the last two years, she lived at the Powell Valley Assisted Living Center in Gresham, Oregon.
Bernice is survived by her husband, Robert I. Green; her children, Ronald Lee Green, Kevin James Green, Gary Irvin Green, Sherry May Green and Robert Stanley Green, at least 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and at least one great-great- grandchild.
She was proceeded in death by her siblings Helen, John, Stanley, Rose and Francis.
A memorial service will be held at Omega Funeral & Cremation Service, 223 SE 122nd Avenue, Portland, Oregon, on September 28, 2018 at 2 pm. Rev. Wayne Mick, formerly of Azalea Community Church will officiate. She will be interred at Willamette National Cemetery.
