Son of John Philip Gemmer, who was a partner of W. L. Watt in the Hawken Gun Shop, which was established by Jacob and Samuel Hawken in 1821. J.P. bought out the business in 1862. Naturally, his son Julius had a life-long interest in guns and was a sales representative in St. Louis for the Winchester Repeating Arms Company for many years and was also affiliated with his father in the gunshop. He became an ardent collector of antique guns and had an impressive collection. When the Hawken Gun Shop was finally dismantled in 1916, Mr. Gemmer gave the Missouri Historical Society the larger part of this collection.
