He traveled down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in 1858 and stayed with relatives in New Orleans and then left from the port to sail down to the Isthmus of Panama and to then catch a salmon boat going up the west coast to Portland, OR (all with his wife and 3 children, I might add).
