August F. Daro, 86, an expert on delivering babies, women’s diseases, nutrition and even golf, died Tuesday, June 24, 1986 in Evanston Hospital. He was Chairman Emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbus-Cuneo-Cabrini Medical Center and former professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Cook County Graduate School of Medicine and the Stritch School of Medicine of Loyola University.
Dr. Daro, who lived in Wilmette, was the author of two books, one was published entitled, “Dr. Daro’s Nutrition Prescriptions for Your Common Health Problems,” and a golf book, “The Inside Swing”. He had served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945, mostly at a base in Wisconsin, and during that time delivered more than 2,000 babies to military families.
Born in Crotone, Italy, in 1900, Dr. Daro graduated from the Chicago Medical School in 1925. He was an intern at Illinois Masonic Hospital and a resident at Chicago Lying-In Hospital, and he did postgraduate work in England and Vienna.
He served on the staff at Cook County Hospital for more than 20 years and once in 1930 subdued an armed robber in a tussle outside the hospital. Dr. Daro helped organize Cook County Hospital’s gynecological clinic, and was a long-time associate of Dr. Karl Meyer, the well-known superintendent of County Hospital. He married Dr. Meyer’s daughter, Maryann, in 1947. She died in 1976.
During his career, Dr. Daro published numerous scientific papers on obstetrics and gynecology and won many awards. In 1967, he was appointed to the advisory board of the state Public Health Department.
He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Ann, nee Meyer; father of Pamela Ann Case and Karl M. (Toni Marie); grandfather of Kimberly, Clint, Karly and Nicholas; brother of Jess Daro and Theresa Daro. Funeral from Blake-Lamb Funeral Home to Assumption BVM Church. Interment Forest Home.
