Harold Estel Wahlstrom, 87, of Buchanan, Michigan passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on October 30th, 2018.

Harold was born in Judsonia, Arkansas on April 12th, 1931. The eldest of four children, Harold was a gentle soul from the start. He grew up in Searcy, Arkansas with his parents, Leonard and Elvie (English) Wahlstrom, and siblings, Winford, Rose, and William. In the summer of 1948, he met his soulmate, Jessie “Alene” (Kelems) Wahlstrom, and his life would never be the same. Harold and Alene were married in Lepanto, Arkansas on October 1st, 1949. The following year, they welcomed their first child, Barbara, and made the 600-mile move north to Buchanan, Michigan. Shortly thereafter, they were blessed with a second daughter, Teresa, and son, Scott.

Harold was first and foremost a dedicated and loving husband and father. A self-taught Journeyman Tool and Die Maker/Machinist, he spent most of his working career (1951-1987 - 36 years) at Buchanan Steel where he perfected his trade and made life-long friendships with all his co-workers. He finished his career and retired in 1997 from Premier Tool and Die in Berrien Springs. Harold and Alene were also founding members of the Niles-Buchanan General Baptist Church, which is now the Portage Road General Baptist Church. He loved his Lord and Savior and possessed the gift of love and kindness to everyone he knew and met.

He was an amazing craftsman with the ability to fabricate anything out of steel. A local “fix-it” man, he could often be found in his shop after work fixing family and friend’s lawnmowers, tractors, and cars. And while his trade was machining, his passion was farming and gardening. He could be found gardening several fields around his house and would be called on by friends around the area to plow and prepare their gardens for planting with his well-known Massey-Ferguson tractor. People would drive by often in the summer just to admire his beautiful garden.

Harold is lovingly remembered by his siblings; Winford (Doris) Wahlstrom of LaPorte, IN and William (Shirley) Wahlstrom of Buchanan; children Barbara (Gary) Herman of Buchanan, Teresa Hall of Lake Bluff, IL, and Scott (Stacy) Wahlstrom of Buchanan; grandchildren Jason, Matt, Kelli, Katie, Joshua, Jordan, and Jacob; great-grandchildren Bethany, Taylor, Cassie, Hannah, Harper, and Worthy; and many other devoted family members.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents (Leonard and Elvie), sister, Rose Sears, and wife, Alene.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to friends, loved ones, and the incredible staff of Hospice Caring Circle. Harold’s team of Ashley, Allison, Christina, Johnathon, Greg, and Michelle provided loving care along with emotional, and spiritual support. They have been a heartwarming blessing to all. The family has also been graced with the love and assistance of their dear Aunt Marcy, who helped care for Harold in his final months.
