Rev. Smith was pastor of the United Methodist Church of Monticello.
This northern Wisconsin farm boy was born in Amery, Wis., on October 4, 1943. After graduating from Clear Lake High School, he went on and graduated from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls. Post graduate work was done at both the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis and Wesley Seminary in Washington, D.C.
His corporate career in marketing included Webb Publishing in St. Paul, Minn., The Parker Pen Co. in Janesville, Wis., Star Expansion in Mountainville, and Eran Lighting & Plastics in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Gene was appointed by the New York Conference United Methodist Church to serve as an interim lay speaker at the Mountainville UMC and as a local missionary working with the Pine Bush UMC. After graduating from Wesley Seminary, Gene served the churches of the Fosterdale, Kenoza Lake, Jeffersonville Parish, the Milton-Marlboro United Methodist Church and presently the Monticello UMC, and Chaplain for the Village of Monticello.
Gene is survived by his wife, Terrence Lee Chapin Smith; one son, Scott and wife, Maureen of Wallkill; granddaughter, Terriann; grandson, Scott Patrick Smith of Wallkill; one brother, Kirt and wife, Catherine of Clear Lake, Wis.; four sisters: Myrna Gaston of Phoenix, Ariz., Carmen Schindler and husband, Tom of Duluth, Minn., Maureen Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Coleen Johnston and husband, Bruce of Mazeppa, Minn; 14 nieces and nephews.
Gene was predeceased by his parents, Wilford and Elsie Smith; and daughter, Heidi Chapin Smith.
Friends may call on Sunday, May 20, 2007 at the United Methodist Church, 445 Broadway, Monticello with social time in fellowship hall from 2-5 p.m., visitation in the sanctuary from 3-5 p.m. and Memorial Services at 6 p.m. with Bishop Jeremiah Park and Rev. Dr. Mark Chatterton officiating.
Interment will be private at Hamptonburgh Cemetery Campbell Hall.
