Greta Gene (Hughes) Miller, born on January 13, 1936 in Tyler, Texas to Gene and Greta (Dayton) Hughes, died on Monday, October 29, 2018 in Denton, Texas. On August 13, 1955, she married Troy P. Miller, Jr. in the First United Methodist Church, Sanger, Texas.
Greta graduated from Sanger ISD in 1953 and received a B.A. w/Honors, M.Ed. and further graduate classes from UNT and TWU. Beginning with a 1-year stint at Sanger ISD in 1956, Greta enjoyed 40-year career in teaching. She spent 5 years at Plano ISD (substitute) and 3 years at Woodrow Elementary in Denton before returning to Sanger ISD, where she taught until retirement in 1996. She taught multiple levels at SISD and started the STARS program serving as both teacher and Director of Gifted Education. She also served a term as Curriculum Director. All her students were special to her.
Greta was a life-long member of First United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities. She was a member in college of Alpha Chi, Chi Omega, Mortar Board (Meritum chapter), Kappa Delta Pi, Ellen H. Richards Club (V.P.), Women’s Forum (Elected Rep.), Top Co-ed, Phi Upsilon, Who’s Who at NT, Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities. Later, Wednesday Study Club, WMU, Spring Creek Cemetery Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Sanger Area Historical Society, Sanger Education Foundation, and Mortar Board Alumni in Denton (a term as President). She also served as Election Judge for Precinct 11 for the first Republican primary election ever held in Valley View, Texas, and was a delegate to several state Republican party conventions.
A memorial fund in her honor has been established with the Sanger Education Foundation to recognize her years of service in teaching.
Greta visited most of the states as well as Canada (Quebec), Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales), China, and Zambia (2-week safari with Troy and celebrated their 35th anniversary there (she caught lots of fish in the Lunsemfwa River including the entrée for the anniversary dinner – Cornish jack)). She enjoyed many types of music and had taken piano lessons as a young lady. She also studied stained glass art. Reading was another lifetime interest as were flowers and birds.
Greta was a direct descendant of Col. Elias Dayton, Continental Army (later, Maj. General of New Jersey Militia) and a collateral descendant of Jonathan Dayton the youngest signer of the U.S. Constitution (one of the sons of Col. Dayton).
In addition to her many friends, Greta leaves behind her husband Troy; her son Steven and his wife Dianne, of Camarillo, CA; her daughter Andrea Miller Bohlig and her husband Mike of Hutto, TX; granddaughter, Julie Miller Ragnarsson of Sanger, TX; and grandson Philip Bohlig of Hutto, TX; sister Diane Barentine and brother-in-law Andy of Dallas.
Visitation will be held at Coker Funeral Home, Sanger on Thursday, November 1, 2018, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 2, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church, Sanger under the direction of Rev. Phillip Stobaugh. Interment will be at Spring Creek Cemetery, Spring Creek Road, northwest of Valley View, Texas (exit 491 from I35, then west, 2 miles).
