Mary Jane Gilchriest was born in Warren county, Iowa, July 17, 1859 and departed this life on August 8, 1949 at Beaver City, Nebr., at the age of 90 years and 22 days.
She was the daughter of Deliah and Lisha Nicholson of Medora, IA, where she was united in marriage to Robert Scott Gilchriest. To this union were born 12 children; Charles Gilchriest of Denver; Theodore Gilchriest of Broadwater; George Gilchriest of Bridgeport; Mrs Mae Quinn and Mrs Mary Jane Criddlebaugh of Beaver City; Mrs Grace Goosic of Nevada, IA., ; Mrs Maude Montonye of Alma,; Mrs Nannie Thalheim of Long Island, Kans.,; and Mrs Fay Day of Oregon City, Ore..
Mr and Mrs Gilchriest and family moved to Nebraska in 1898, locating near Stamford. Her husband preceded her in death in Feb., 1915. One daughter and two sons have also preceded her in death. She has two sisters Mrs Clara Hewitt of Los Angeles, and Mrs Rose Leonard of Beaver City; also 21 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mrs Gilchriest joined the Presbyterian church at an early age in which faith she continued to live. Aunt Jane or Grandma, by which she was known to her many relatives and friends, will be greatly missed. She loved her many grandchildren,great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren and enjoyed their many visits. She was always busy helping others and her last few years, did quilting work for relatives and friends. She always had a welcome smile for everyone who knew her. She was a kind and loving mother.
She was among the early settlers in Nebraska, living here 55 years, mostly in the Stamford community, and experienced the hardships of the early days.
After the passing of her husband, Mrs Gilchriest continued keeping her home together and rearing her younger children. She lived in this community until 1926 when she moved to the western part of the state, locating near Bridgeport, living with her son, Ted for several years. Later she made her home with her son Charles and family at Scottsbluff for many years. She fell and injured her hip from which she never completely recovered to be able to walk again without the aid of crutches. She was very cheerful and patient with her afflection.
After her accident she came back to Beaver City and spent three years with her daughters, Mrs Mae Quinn and Mrs Grace Goosic and visited with her other daughters. She made her home the past three years in the Carrie Taft Nursing Home, where she made many friends and will be greatly missed with her cheerful voice and happy smile.
All of the 10 living children and many other relatives were present for the funeral services.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev Nelson Garner.
Music was furnished by Mrs Verlyn Thalheim who sang, Good Night and Good Morning; a duet composed of Mrs Mary Williams and Mrs Faye Leonard sang Does Jesus Care, and a quartette composed of Mrs Lela Marble, Mrs Mary Williams, Mrs Emiline Fletcher and Mrs Pearl Combs sang, No Night There. They were accompanied by Mrs Helen Manley.
Pall Bearers were Emery Quinn, Floyd Quinn, Eldon Gilchriest, Verlyn Thalheim, Lloyd Thalheim and Cecil Goosic.
Burial was made in the Deaver cemetery, near Bethel church.
