Reuel was the eldest of eight children and eldest of four sons born to Reuel Atwood and Abigail Savery Tilson. Grandson of Nathaniel Atwood and Zilpah Shurtleff, Ichabod Tilson and Abigail Bumpus.
He was the husband of Louisa Jane Atwood, the daughter of Ebenezer Atwood and Waitstill Lucas. They were married 25 Dec 1860 in Middleborough and had the following children; Elsie, Elbridge, Fredrick, Eustace, Emma, Amy, Samuel and Everett.

Mohican was laid down by Portsmouth Navy Yard, Kittery, Maine, in August 1858; launched on 15 February 1859; and commissioned on 29 November 1859, Commander Sylvanus William Godon in command.
