BARRE - LauraBelle Janet Wilkinson passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013, at age 76 at Rowan Court Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Danville on Nov. 17, 1936, to Frank Gray and Leona Wheeler Gray.
She grew up in Danville and Hyde Park, helping her dad on his farms.
She married Robert Earl Wilkinson on Sept. 26, 1953. They raised their family of six children in Graniteville. When the need arose for her to assist financially in raising her family, she chose the field of health care. She worked for several years as a nurse's aide. She was extremely compassionate, caring, gentle, patient and was well-loved by both her residents and those she worked with, as she was always willing to go the extra mile to make someone feel cared for. In some of the nursing homes she worked in, she was responsible for training new nursing assistants because of her thoroughness and dependability. When the time came for licensing of nursing assistants, many of her training ideas were utilized in setting up new training programs.
She enjoyed singing, dancing and playing guitar as a young woman. She was very proud of her youngest son, who is a champion fiddler, and would listen to his CDs for hours and hours for relaxation and comfort during her stay at Rowan Court. She always had a love for horses and cats. She just about always had at least one cat. Sage, her most recent Maine coon beauty, lives in Williamstown with the daughter who took care of her before she went into Rowan Court six months ago.
LauraBelle was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1961, and she had complete faith in the Bible's promise of perfect life forever on this earth when it is restored to paradisiac conditions. Going in the door-to-door ministry was something that she loved to do, and she did it faithfully for many decades. Doing this teaching work that she loved enabled her to find someone who she considered her best friend, Carole Morin, who now shares Mom's faith and hope, along with LauraBelle's children and many others to whom she so lovingly taught the Bible's message. When she got to the point where she physically could no longer go from door to door, she always made sure she had Bible-based tracts and other Bible literature with her and she would sit in the car and hand out tracts to people in parking lots, speak to people she found waiting in doctors' offices, wherever she was, she would find someone to share her hope for the future with. Her biblical hope is to awaken in the resurrection in perfect health on a paradise earth, where she can have her horse ranch and her houseful of cats, and spend eternity doing what Jehovah God has for her to do.
She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Robert Earl Wilkinson. She is survived by three siblings, Joyce Bradshaw, of Milton-Freewater, Ore., Stephen Gray, of Berlin, Vt., and Rosalie Berwanger, of Milton-Freewater, Ore. She was predeceased by one sibling, Pearl Gross.
LauraBelle has six surviving children: Janet Peake and her husband, David, of Barre; Dean Wilkinson and his wife, Lisa, of Williamstown; Shirley Gomez and her husband, Scott, of Milton; Betty Roya and her husband, Shane Sr., of Williamstown; Donna Wilkinson, of Williamstown; Thomas Wilkinson and his wife, Rose, of Whitehall, N.Y.
She is survived by 11 grandchildren: Jeremy Peake, Jamie Jones, Jennifer Armbrister, Bethany Gauthier, Shane Roya Jr., Shaun Roya, Kylee Roya, Seth Roya, Kalynn Roya, Crystal Jenks, Angela LaRock.
She is survived by 16 great-grandchildren: Jordan, Katana, Jasmine, Dakota, Trey, Eyahri, Haleyah, Ryan, Samuel, Sebastian, Jackson, Daxton, Carter, Briony, Ivy, Gage.
The family would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Rowan Court's nurses and staff for their exceptional care and understanding through a very difficult time. We appreciate the devotion of all of the health care workers who were involved in Mom's care.
