Benjamin "Franklin" Coen was named for the doctor who attended his birth. He was stillborn and the mother died at the same time. The tombstone does say "Benjamin M.", but that could be a mistake on the part of the engraver. Another thought is that he was given another middle name of "McClain" because that was his mother's maiden name. Old Family Records written by Benjamin's half-brother, in 1910, give Benjamin's name as Benjamin "Franklin" Coen. There were two physicians named "Benjamin Franklin" in Carroll County, MO at the time of Benjamin's birth (Benjamin Franklin WHEAT and Benjamin Franklin SATTERFIELD). Dr. Satterfield seems to be the most likely, since he also lived in Norborne Township, closer to the Coen family than the other doctor.
