Thomas "Tom" George Porter, 75, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2018 at his home. He was born January 26, 1943 in Greenville, SC, a son of the late Judge and Elizabeth Porter.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Betty South Porter of the home; children, Stephanie Ann Porter of Belmont, Thomas G. Porter II of Waxhaw; grandchildren, Samantha Rankin, Brock Wilsey and Dylan Porter; brother, Donald Porter and wife, Judy as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by a brother, Judge Porter, Jr. and a sister, Joan Taylor.
Tom graduated from The State University of New York (SUNY) with a Bachelor’s degree in labor law, and worked for many years as an executive leader for several industrial chemical companies, then for FEMA before he retired.
Tom was an avid collector of civil war memorabilia, Native American artifacts as well as ancient oriental pottery. He had a vast knowledge of Art, American and World history, and enjoyed sharing this with others. He and his wife, Betty traveled the world, and enjoyed time in places such as Australia, Malaysia, Egypt, and China just to name a few. Tom was kind to everyone he met, and always went out of his way to help others be successful. He loved to laugh, and always found the humor in things. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He is greatly loved and will be terribly missed by those who knew him.
