Irene was born in Iliff, Colorado on June 15, 1924, to Alex Sr. and Barbara (Gerk) Lambrecht, German immigrant farmers from Russia.
Irene graduated from Sedgwick County High School in 1943 and moved to Denver where she worked until she was united in marriage to Lt. Eugene E. Armstrong, a U.S. Army Air Forces fighter pilot, on February 14, 1944.
They settled on his parent's farm in western Nebraska raising their five children near the town of Big Springs. In 1965 they moved north of Midland, SD where they continued raising cattle and wheat on the Diamond Ring Ranch.
Irene moved to Haines, Alaska in 1975 making it her home for nearly 40 years. She was united in marriage to Tom Ward , Sr. in 1978.
They built a home on Piedad Road in Haines where they enjoyed views of the mountains and the Chilkat River. Irene and Tom participated in many aspects and events of the Haines community until Tom's death in 1998.
Irene spent the rest of her life involved with her children, grandchildren and friends who will remember her for her loving kindness and sweet disposition. Irene had a strong personal faith in God and passed away peacefully at Haines Assisted Living Center at the age of 90 on November 15, 2014. Full funeral services were held in Haines. A graveside service will be held September 8th, 2015 at Riverside Cemetery in Pierre, SD at 9:00 AM.
Irene was preceded in death by her twin son, Vaughn, grandson Brian Bettenhausen, and husband Tom.
She is survived by her children; Vern (Hope) Armstrong (Pierre, SD), Jo Anne (Bob) Bettenhausen (Lincoln, NE), Jan Sue (Ralph) Warren (Sioux Falls, SD), and Barbara (Terry) Pardee (Haines, AK), along with stepchildren Tim Ward , Tom Ward , Jr. and Wendy Hogins (of Alaska). She is also survived by her sister, Betty Powell (Ovid, Colorado), and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
