Mary D. (Marchello-Clark) Masters
JULY 15, 1931 ~ OCTOBER 8, 2018 (AGE 87)
Mary Deloris Masters passed away Monday October 8th, 2018 at the HCI Hospice Kavanaugh House in Des Moines, Iowa. She was a resident of Appanoose County, Iowa.
Mary was born at home, south of Brazil, Iowa to Giacinto Carlo and Maddalena (Goffo) Marchello. Her family moved to the William Felkner farm in 1932, farming in the summer and owning and operating Big 5 Coal mine. She attended Silknitter country school and Centerville High School, graduating in 1948.
After graduation she moved to Kansas City, Missouri to work at the Jones Store as a cashier, living with older sister Dominica (Billie) and her husband John Mitchell. While there she met Robert Clark, who was stationed at the Olathe Naval Air Station. They married September 23, 1949, and their first son was born in Kansas City, Kansas. After Robert's assignment to the USS Gearing of the Atlantic Fleet, their second son was born in Centerville during the move. The family lived on Simerly Creek Tennessee and Portsmouth, Virginia during this time. Following Robert's severe back injury and medical discharge from the navy, they moved to Centerville in August of 1955.
Farming was a big part of family life from then on. They operated a dairy, raised hogs, sold eggs and broilers, switched to a beef herd and rented row crop ground during the early years. She did chores, drove tractors, baled hay and all the various things necessary to keep things operating smoothly. In addition to the normal farm work she worked retail, starting at the Spurgeon's store for $.35 per hour. Over the years she also worked at the Double R Dairy Bar, Snider's and J.C. Penny's Store from 1983 to 1998. Big gardens and kids' activities filled up the days and years after work was done.
She was active in the community supporting her kids and the community. Those activities include membership and officer's positions in the PTA, Band Mothers, Choraleer Mothers as well as many committee positions over the years. She was a volunteer in the Democratic Party, a Poll worker for close to fifty years, township clerk for nearly fifty years, a member of the Appanoose County Historical Society, St Williams and St Mary's Church, met for over sixty years with high school friends for lunch, and other activities. In addition, she gave much more than the above to her family and friends.
Mary and Robert were divorced. Later, when she married Gary Masters, and she gained two more children.
She is survived by sons: Robert Bradley Clark (Mary) of West Des Moines: Bruce Allan Clark (Cathy) of Centerville; Bryon Keith Clark (Margaret) of Sherman, TX; daughter Brenda Masters of Cedar Rapids; and son Jeff Masters (Janet) of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren: Jennifer Clark (Jake) Bates; Seth Clark (Megan); Michael Clark (Molly); Megan Clark (Colby) Law; Nathan Clark; Natasha Clark (Terry) Schnathorst; Eric Clark (Jaymie); Gerald Clark; Charlotte Masters; Gus Masters; Ike Masters; 5 great grandchildren and one on the way: nieces Josephine Balagna; Patty Mitchel (David) Baumgartner; and many great nieces, nephews and cousins and special friends the Schmidts.
She was Predeceased by her parents; and siblings: Margaret Pomatto Balagna, Giacomo Pomatto, and Dominca Marchello Mitchell.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00AM, Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Father Bill Hubmann officiating. A visitation will take place Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville, with the family greeting friends from 9:00-11:00AM. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Centerville.
