First woman student body president of Russ High School.

Mildred A. Fletcher, 87, of Fletcher Hills, who was active in the social and philanthropic life of San Diego since the 1920s, died Monday in the Anza Convalescent Hospital in El Cajon.

She was the wife of Ed Fletcher Jr. and daughter-in-law of the late Col. Ed Fletcher for whom Fletcher Hills is named. The Fletcher family was involved in land and water development throughout the county.

Mildred A. Burke Fletcher was born in Walnut, Iowa, and moved to San Diego in 1910 with her parents and two sisters. She was a 1920 graduate of Russ High School, now San Diego High, where she was student body president, the first woman to hold that post.

She graduated from the University of Oregon in 1923, specializing in education. She was a member of Chi Omega. She and Ed Fletcher Jr. were married in 1924 at Lake Cuyamaca.

Mr. Fletcher, who was in the real estate and development business with his father, had become a pilot in 1918 in World War I. Later, he owned his own plane and the couple spent a lot of time flying. Mr. Fletcher started the Borrego Air Ranch in 1945, and the couple spent most weekends in Borrego Springs. He also got his glider pilot's license and rode the air currents that rise above Borrego.

The Fletchers were developers in Fletcher Hills, Grossmont, Del Mar and other areas throughout the coun ty and built dams to create lakes, including Henshaw. Land also was donated and set aside for parks. Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher enjoyed San Diego social life and were members of organizations, including the Cotillion (dance) Club.

Mrs. Fletcher held her own niche in the social, cultural and philanthropic life of the community. She was a member of the Thursday Club and supported cultural projects.

Survivors include three sons, Edward III, Lawrence and Michael; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Salli Lynn Chapel at Greenwood Memorial Park. Her daughter-in-law, Donna (Mrs. Michael) Fletcher, who has a degree in theology, will officiate. Entombment will be in Greenwood Mausoleum.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Fletcher's name may be sent to philanthropies of choice.
