Trooper Alexander began his career with the Texas Department of Public Safety on February 14, 1967. He died when Thomas Norman Tolmie rammed his patrol car.

Alexander who was stationed in Hillsboro, was assisting other officers attempting to stop Tolmie in a stolen Blazer. The trooper attempted to get in front of Tolmie when he swerved sharply striking the patrol unit. Both drivers lost control. The patrol unit skidded in front of the Blazer. Both went in the ditch, then airborne. As the patrol car landed on its side, the Blazer hit it. The car turned over again and the Blazer landed on it and rolled off.

Tolmie was charged with capital murder, but he killed himself before trial.

Alexander was survived by his wife and daughter.
