Sheriff Alexander began his career with the Dallam County Sheriff's Department on January 1, 1926.

Sheriff Alexander and Chief Deputy H.D. Foust joined Hartley County Deputy Earl Damron to serve a felony warrant on Lon Dillinger at a farmhouse about five miles south of Dalhart.
Sheriff Alexander and Damron went to the front door while Foust covered the back door. When Foust heard a shot he entered the house. Lon Dillinger lunged at him and he shot the outlaw in the head killing him instantly. Dillinger's brother, Ordell, opened fire on the deputy and Foust fatally wounded him and wounded Arleta Borger who was armed with a shotgun. Foust found the sheriff mortally wounded in the head. He died 40 minutes later.

The sheriff had told his wife before he left that he felt he was walking into a trap, but he was going anyway.
