Bessie Bernita Pempek, 88, of Springfield, died at 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at her home. Bessie was born December 8, 1929, in Woodland Township, Fulton County, Astoria, IL the daughter of Carl and Ferne Beaty Schisler. She married George Alexander Pempek on November 10, 1960, in Springfield; he preceded her in death on January 23, 2018.

Bessie graduated from Western Illinois University in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary education. She taught at Mt. Sterling, Lewiston, Wheaton and Jane Adams in Springfield. Bessie enjoyed reading, spending time with family and especially attending John’s football games and Lydia’s piano recitals.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and sister, Nelda Parker.

She is survived by her son, Byron G. (Sara) Pempek of Springfield; two grandchildren, John B. Pempek and Lydia R. Pempek; sisters, Melba Collins of Macomb and Carolyn Holloway of Chillicothe; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation and Funeral Mass: Family will receive friends from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at the Church of the Little Flower, Springfield. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Allen M. Kemme, celebrant. Burial to follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
