Ruth Ann (Volkman) Agee
Aug. 22, 1928 — May 9, 2007

Ruth Agee, 78, of Lebanon died Wednesday at the Mennonite Home.

She was born to William and Grace Volkman at their home near Springfield. She lived in Eugene until she was 11, when the family moved to Albany. In 1942, they moved to Aumsville, where Ruth graduated from high school in 1947 and began her business career at the Oregon State Highway Department.

Ruth married Lawrence "Larry" Russell in 1949. They had a daughter, Taleah. Her husband, Larry, died in an accident in 1952.

Ruth married Lawrence "Lefty" Kujawa in 1954. They had two children, John and Jill. Ruth stayed home with her family until 1956, when she became secretary to the superintendent of Albany Elementary School District 5, where she worked until 1979. Ruth and Lefty divorced in 1966.

Ruth married Wallace Agee in 1968 and readily accepted his daughters, Jan and Judith, into her family.

Her retirement in 1979 lasted about four months, before she returned to work at a Corvallis engineering firm for the next 16 years. She retired again. Upon the death of her husband, Wally, in 1996, she moved to a grandma cottage, built especially for her next to daughter Jill's house in Lebanon, where she lived very happily.

Ruth was an avid volunteer, serving on the Friends of Jazz Committee's Board of Directors, and volunteered for the Albany Downtown Association and the Linn County Fair & Expo Center. She was a lifetime member of the Scio Historical Society. She was a two-time cancer survivor and attended the Lebanon Breast Cancer Support Group.

Ruth enjoyed her home, loved to read, work jigsaw puzzles, play with her grandchildren, and help feed the horses, dogs, cats and rabbit on the farm. She loved music all her life, and especially enjoyed attending Seaside Jazz Festivals with her best friend Eunice Arthur. She knew hundreds of songs, sang on stage as a teen, and loved to dance. She inherited her mother's talent for sewing and made numerous costumes for Albany's Downtown Victorian Christmas, for Civil War Reenactments, and for Halloween and community events. She took great pride in each of her family's accomplishments and gave all of them her unconditional love and support.

Ruth is survived by children, grandchildren and their families: Taleah and Dayton Edmonds, Alia Edmonds and Zack Schaller, Brennan Schaller, Nish Edmonds and Robert Eagleson; John and Maggie Kujawa, Kasia Kujawa and Jay Gutierrez, Haden Kujawa and Kelly Sherwood; Jill and Scott Ingalls, and Matthew and Macey Henderson; Jan and Tom Sackman, and Jeff and Kim Sackman; Judy and Dan Shier, and Spencer, Marty and Desiree Shier; and former husband Lefty Kujawa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Larry Russell and Wally Agee; sister Lucille; grandchildren Amy and Chelsea; and several beloved cousins, aunts and uncles.

A memorial celebration will be Monday at the United Presbyterian Church, Fifth and Broadalbin, in Albany. Private burial of cremation ashes will be at Franklin Butte Masonic Cemetery near Scio.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lebanon Breast Cancer Support Group in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 Washington St. S.W., Albany, OR 97321 (www.fisherfuneralhome.com).
