Born in either Lenox, MA or Tallahassee, FL to Rev. George W. Clark and Joanna Lathrop Winslow. Harriet's twin sister, Eliza Coit Clark, died of "bowel complaint" on May 14, 1851. Harriet's father died on Christmas Eve 1850 at the Pine Hill Plantation in Tallahassee, FL.

Harriet's mother remarried George Starr King in March 1852, and Harriet had several half-siblings: Ella, Florence, Annis, George, Carrie, Virginia, and Myron. She married Robert Gorrie Baker in Apalachicola and they had 7 children: Florence, Elton, Robert, William, George, Miron, and Marguerite.

Harriet probably died in soon after giving birth to Marguerite in 1896. Her husband died the following year. Her children moved to Jacksonville to live with her sisters Ella and Annis with the exception of Florence who moved to Atlanta.
