Melvin Keate Despain, 90, died Sunday, August 6, 2000 at his Mesa home. Born in Granite, Utah, Keate came to Arizona with his parents, Oscar Newell and Lizzie Adell Boyce Despain in 1917, settling in the Prescott area. Married to Ora Shelley in 1932, they lived in Heber until 1947, when they moved to Joseph City. They were parents of six children. After 50 years of marriage, Ora passed on. Keate then married Genevieve Tanner Bushman. He is survived by Genevieve, his five children, 28 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, a sister, Inez Porter of Mesa, and a brother, Winston of Medford, Oregon. Keate farmed in Joseph City, but he will best be known for his building skills: he was an accomplished carpenter and mason. A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served 3 missions and was a Mesa temple ordinance worker. (Arizona Republic August 9, 2000)
