IN MEMORIAM,

Chester A. Sutherland, 82, of Plainville passed away on Thursday, (November 2, 2006) at New Britain General Hospital.

He is the husband of Helen (Chesanek) Sutherland. Chester was born on January 30, 1924 in Plainville to the late Charles and Jessie (Booth) Sutherland.

Chet was a lifelong resident of Plainville, having graduating from Plainville High School and Waterbury State Technical College.

Chet served his country in the Connecticut State Guard from May 30, 1942 – February 15, 1943, and in the United States Navy. He was a Petty Officer 1st Class (Quartermaster). He was Active Duty from March 3, 1943 – November 23, 1945; then in Reserve from September 6, 1946 – August 30, 1950, and returning to Active Duty from August 30, 1950 – August 21, 1951 having been Honorably Discharged twice. He earned five Battle Stars for Military Campaigns: US Navy Invasions aboard the USS Barnett (APA5) from July 1943-1945 at; Gila, Sicily (July 9-3, 1943); Salerno, Italy (Sept. 9-11, 1943; Normandy, France (July 6-7, 1944 "D Day"; Rivieria, France (August 15-20, 1944 and Okinawa, Japan (April 1-9, 1945. Chet earned many service ribbons and medals including; US Navy, American Campaign, European-North African Campaign, World War II Victory, World War II Occupation (Asia), National Defense, Combat Action Ribbon, Korean Service, Philippine Liberation, Philippine Independence, United Nations and Normandy Campaign.

Chet retired from Coltec Industries, Chandler Evans, Control Systems Division.

He was a member of the Plainville Fire Department from 1952 – 1994. He served in several capacities from 1959-1994 as Secretary, Treasurer and Fire Police. He was a certified Fire Instructor II for the State of CT National Professional Qualifications Board.

Chet was also a life member of the Madeley-Roberts VFW Post 574, serving as Post Quartermaster and Post Trustee, a member of the CT Fire Department Instructors Association, CT Fire Photographers Association and the Hartford County Fire Emergency Plan, serving in many capacities from 1984-1989 as President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President and Treasurer.

Chet was on the Plainville Town Council from Nov. 2, 1967-Nov. 4, 1969, Chairman of the Plainville Library Building Committee and Vice Chairman of the Municipal building Committee for several projects. He is a man that will be greatly missed.

Besides his loving wife of 59 years Helen Sutherland, he leaves his two children Linda Ann (Sutherland) Grabulis of Farmington, and Larry Alan Sutherland and his wife Barbara of Plainville; and two grandchildren Michael Paul Grabulis and Justin Thomas Sutherland.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 10 a.m. at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St., Plainville with the Reverend Jim Caron officiating.

Burial will follow in West Cemetery, Plainville. Family and friends may gather on Friday (TODAY) from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Chester's name may be made to the Plainville Fire Company Scholarship Fund, 77 West Main St., Plainville, CT 06062.
