Frances Ahern was born in Nebraska on September 5, 1925, the daughter of John Ahern and Nelle Thorndike. After growing up in Wayne, Nebraska, she had a long career as an educator. She was a high school teacher in New York for many years and also taught for several years in China. She received a PhD in archeology from SUNY Stony Brook.

She died in New York City on February 8, 2017. She was survived by one sister, Joan. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Ann (Stevens) and Josephine (Bressler).
