Louis Potash, 96, passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the Laurels of GreenTree Ridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
He was born in Baltimore, Maryland to parents who emigrated from Poland after World War I. Shortly after graduating from Baltimore Polytechnic High School, Lou was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served in Holland, France, Germany and Austria during World War II.
After the War, Lou began his long career in Baltimore as a mechanical engineer, designing heating and air conditioning systems for large office buildings and shopping malls. He continued working full time into his early 70's before retiring to Weaverville, North Carolina in 2012.
Lou had been an avid tennis player and bicyclist. He and his wife of 45 years, Doris Trainor Potash, traveled extensively throughout North America, Europe and the Middle East. When aging limited his travel, Lou still enjoyed short excursions throughout Western North Carolina to take advantage of the arts, music, theater and dining in the region. He never tired of the scenery along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Marc Potash of Littleton, Colorado, David Potash of Kent, Washington, and daughters Rachael Flynn of Severna Park, Maryland, and Lisa Potash of Atlanta, Georgia, and four grandchildren.
Private burial will be held at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at their home in Weaverville from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30.
