Alson Gray Frazer was born April 8, 1824, in Guilford County, North Carolina, the son of Henry and Mary "Polly" (Otwell) Frazer. Alson's great grandfather Thomas Frazier spelled his last name with an "i", but Alson and most of his descendants dropped the "i", thus Frazer.

In 1828 Alson moved with his parents from North Carolina to Randolph County, Indiana; then to Hamilton County, Indiana, in 1838; and to Boone County, Indiana, in 1844.

On January 14, 1847, at Thorntown, Boone County, Indiana, Alson married Hannah Rees, the daughter of Zachariah and Mary (Davis) Rees. They had two children, Anna J., born February 2, 1848, who married Josiah W. Winslow; and Elwood, born February 21, 1850, and who died on October 21, 1851. Hannah died on February 23, 1852, and is buried at Thorntown, Indiana.

Following Hannah's death, later in 1852 Alson moved to near Denova, Henry County, Iowa. On July 21, 1853, he married Mary M. Hockett, the daughter of Edward and Betsey (Harris) Hockett. Mary was born December 9, 1833, in Randolph County, Indiana, and she died on August 2, 1904.

Alson and Mary had seven children: (1) Edward Howard, born March 31, 1854, he married Martha Alice Harshbarger; (2) Martha, born January 13, 1856, she married Albert Lamm; (3) Hannah, born June 7, 1858, she married John W. Moon; (4) Elzena D., born July 16, 1860, she married Thomas Penn Smith; (5) Rebecca Jane, born April 28, 1862, she married Thomas Eli White; (6) Albert Henry, born March 22, 1864, he married Anna W. Trueblood; and (7) Alson G. Frazer, born on May 24, 1866 (after his father died), he married Leona Florence Harshbarger.

Alson Gray Frazer died on January 28, 1866. In her autobiography "Jewels from My Casket" (1910), Alson's daughter Anna J. (Frazer) Winslow wrote that Alson died from pneumonia, which ended with brain fever.
