Much beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle, friend, pastor and servant of God, Eugene G. Slape, died peacefully in his sleep following a brief illness at age 92 on April 24.

Pastor Eugene is survived by his wife, Ruth of Albany; children Cleatis (Darrell Paul) Hoskins of Albany, Daniel (Debbie) Slape of Bend, George (Conni) Slape of Bend, Rebecca (Chad) Filer of Portland, Gregory (Kelly) Slape of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George W. and Flora Mae Slape; four siblings: Rouse Slape, Nova Ravan, Velma Ralls and Lamoin Milligan; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Eugene was born in Bromide, Oklahoma. He grew up attending Oklahoma schools, graduating high school in Colgate, Oklahoma. Eugene briefly attended engineering college before following his brother to the shipyards in Portland. He soon joined the U.S. Navy to more directly assist the escalating war effort. Eugene served aboard the destroyer USS Howorth of the Seventh Fleet. History records many battles supported by the USS Howorth; however, it was the April 1945 kamikaze attack that forever changed the life of Eugene Slape. As the firestorm blazed and shipmates lay dying around him, Eugene met the God of his mother, his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His call to the ministry was sealed and his life would never be the same.

Instead of following a career path in engineering, Eugene met and subsequently married Ruth Olp on Dec. 28, 1946. They promptly moved to San Francisco where Eugene preached in a little gospel mission on Third and Howard while pursuing his theological degree at Glad Tidings Bible College.

Upon graduation, he furthered his education at San Francisco State College and then entered full-time pastoral ministry with the Assemblies of God in 1951. He was formally ordained in 1955 and pastored several churches in Oregon and Northern California for approximately 50 years.

The family welcomes all who wish to attend a memorial and celebration of Eugene’s life at 2 p.m. Friday, May 15, at Albany First Assembly Church, 2817 Santiam Highway S.E., Albany. A reception will follow. Eugene's brother-in-law, the Rev. Leonard Olp, will officiate with Oregon Assemblies of God Ministry Lead Pastor, Bill Wilson, participating.

Flowers and condolences may be sent to Albany First Assembly. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to River of Life Assembly, 979 Tucker Road, Hood River, OR 97031, Eugene and Ruth’s church family who loved and assisted them so graciously.

The family wishes to express profound gratitude for the kindness and loving care given by the caregivers at Samaritan Evergreen Hospice.
