Joseph was born and baptized on 29 April 1866 at the parish of St-Clément, located in Beauharnois, Quebec, Canada. He was the son of Christophe Bélanger and Marguerite Grenier. His birth year has been incorrectly recorded anywhere from 1864 to 1867 on many documents, as well as his grave marker. Joseph Bélanger married Célina Roy on 18 January 1886 at the parish of St-Jacques, Embrun, Ontario, Canada. They had 10 children, with the first 7 being born in St-Albert, Ontario, Canada before moving to Michigan where their last 3 children were born. Their children were:

Joseph Bélanger died on 31 March 1948 and was buried on 3 April 1948 in the Bark River Cemetery. His widow Alexina next married widower Jean-Baptiste Paquette. More photos on the family website here:
