Newt was the son of Elihu Hall "Ail" Bigham and Martha M. (Coop) Bigham. His parents came to Bell County, Texas from Bedford County, Tennessee in the fall of 1851 in the wagon train with other Bigham family members.
His parents bought and sold land in various locations in Bell County but in 1865 they purchased large tracts of land on Cottonwood Creek between Temple and Oenaville. Newt was born on this land and attended school at a country school with "Tishia" Easterling who he married 26 June 1884.
"Ail" and Martha Bigham gave Newt 100 acres from their farm and in October 1900 Newt sold this land to purchase a 160 acre
farm between Troy and Bottoms.
He loved and enjoyed his family and rode his buggy every day to see his mother who died not two months before he died.
He could play several musical instruments and never had a lesson. He was active in the politics of the county and when he died his obituary was on the front page of the Temple newspaper. My mother, Edna (Bigham) Mays was only twelve years old when he died and she adored her father.
He was only 44 years old when he died leaving a wife and eleven children.
