Around 9 p.m. on May 10, 1903, Deputy Sheriff Walker Tumlinson went to the county jail to attend to an insane prisoner. A struggle ensued with the prisoner. As Tumlinson came out of the jail his wife noticed he was pale and looked sick. Tumlinson told her his chest hurt. Several doctors were summoned, but his condition worsened. Tumlinson died within an hour. The cause of death was rheumatism of the heart.
Tumlinson was survived by his wife and two children.
