BRANDON — Frances Brown-Close, age 96, died early Tuesday morning, September 16, 2003, at Porter Health & Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury. Mrs. Brown-Close was born November 3, 1906, in Albany, New York. She was the daughter of William J. and Charlotte (Coulter) Buckley.

Mrs. Brown-Close had taught Home Economics at Walcott, N.Y., High School, Brandon High School and Otter Valley Union High School. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, The International Honorary Teachers’ Association and several Vermont Teachers Associations. She belonged to The Monday Club, Brandon Historical Society and had worked over 20 years for The Brandon Community Thrift Shop. She was a past Trustee of The Brandon Free Public Library. She belonged to St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Mrs. Brown-Close always took a great interest in her many students and enjoyed sketching, painting, needlework, traveling and researching her family history. She was much loved by her family and her many friends and students.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy B. Bunting of Brandon; three stepdaughters, Patricia Thomas of Fort Myers, Fla., Margaret Seng of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Ellen Bond of Burlingame, Calif.; Six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive her. She was predeceased by her first husband, Charles H. Brown in 1959. They were married in Albany, N.Y., Sept. 27, 1929. Her second husband, John Winston Close, predeceased her in 2000. They were married in Brandon July 7, 1990. A daughter, Linda Brown Adams, died in 1998.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2003, at 2 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Brandon. The Rev. Gordon Bardos, Rector, will officiate. A private burial will be held in Pine Hill Cemetery. Following the service the family will receive friends in the church undercroft for a time of sharing. There are no public calling hours.

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to The Brandon Free Public Library, 2 Franklin St., Brandon, Vt., or to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Memorial Fund, 19 Conant Square, Brandon, Vt., 05733. Arrangements are under the direction of The Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.*
