In 1897, Alice married George William Hayes, son of Lurelle Hayes and Hattie Terpenny.
This marriage produced seven children with surname Hayes, as follows.
Francis Lurell (1898), Georgia Lillian (1899), Alice Augusta (1901), Genevieve Louise (1903), William Henry (1905), Dorothy E. (1909), and George William Hayes, Jr. (1910).
At some time following the birth of their last child, perhaps in 1912 or 1913,
perhaps a year or two later, George Sr. and Alice Hayes separated permanently.
George Sr. moved to the state of Vermont for work there. He took with him his second-born son William Henry Hayes. One can only guess that it was the little boy who was given a choice and wished to go with his father.
Years later, in 1929, when Alice's son Frank Hayes (Francis) was killed in a car accident,
Frank's daughter Dorothy I. Hayes, at age 5, came to live in her grandmother Alice's household.
Alice raised her grand-daughter Dorothy to adulthood, as a beloved mother, just as with her own children.
Alice Hayes lived a life of caring for her children. She passed along the good principles of her own up-bringing. She died on March 1, 1957 at 81 years of age.
