ALICE MARIE CHERMAK
(1926 - 2016)

Alice Marie Simons Chermak, age 89, a resident at St Mary's at Felician Village, passed away peacefully on June 18th 2016.

Alice was born July 15, 1926 in Lima, Ohio. She graduated from St Rose High School in 1944. She attended the Cincinnati Art School and St Mary's of Notre Dame majoring in art. On May 20, 1950 she married Arthur T. Chermak in Lima, Ohio and then moved to Manitowoc, Wisconsin where they raised their family and were active community members. Alice was instrumental in supporting Art in the establishment and success of the family built and owned Cher-Make Sausage Company. Arthur preceded her in death on November 9, 2009.

Alice was a full time mom, and along with Art, lovingly raised four children, Jim, Chris, Ann and Tom. They were her pride and joy and she dedicated her life to them through supporting their activities and sports. No one could throw a better children's themed birthday party than her. Alice continued to live a joyful and full life with the companionship and support of her children through her final years.
Alice and Art were soul mates for nearly 59 years. One of their passions was travel. Together they traveled throughout Europe and across the country in their motor home, making life long friends wherever they went. For many years they enjoyed extended stays in Door County and Scottsdale, AZ. Even when traveling she stayed connected with home through endless postcards recounting their escapades.

Alice lived to be with people and she was always looking for ways to connect. Everyone she met was special and she could always bring a smile and a laugh with her grace, charm, compassion and quick wit. Every encounter was an opportunity to make a friend and so she was involved in many circles. She was a member of St. Francis Assisi on Waldo and served as a greeter. Alice was active in the community including volunteering at Holy Family Hospital and Rahr-West Museum. She was a member of the Service League of Manitowoc, Daughters of Isabella, The Masquers and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Friendships were enriched on the golf course and at the bridge table. The circles grew as she played a role in the local production of "A Christmas Carol" and was an annual star in the St. Patrick's Day parade. She once said that her goal was, "to make a new friend every day" and that she did and for that we all are enriched!

Alice was creative and artistic. Her home was always festively decorated for every occasion and holiday. She carried her creative flair into her fashion and could spruce up any outfit with just the right accessories. She enjoyed taking painting classes and many of her paintings have been exhibited at various art shows.

Survivors include her four children: Jim (Leslie) Chermak Grafton, WI, Chris (Pete) Honzik Manitowoc, Ann (Don) Zimmer Englewood, CO, and Tom (Mary) Chermak Manitowoc; seven grandchildren, Alison (Dan Probst) Coulson, DJ (Megan Schmiedlin) Coulson, Sara (Noah) Pillsbury, Jeff (Meghan) Zimmer, Katherine Zimmer, Betsy (Bill) Baron and Bill Chermak; four great grandchildren, Sienna, Emma, Brandon, and Annabelle Pillsbury; her sister-in-law Betty and her husband Merlyn Hoefner, along with five nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Esther and Otmer Simons, her brother, Richard Simons, and granddaughter Jessica Chermak.

A celebration of Alice's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at St Francis of Assisi on Waldo (1121 North 14th Street), Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. David Beaudry, with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc.
