Muriel was the daughter of Charles Fielding Morse and Lida E. Ayers. She was one of two children born in their farmhouse in Fairfield. She grew up on the family farm in southeastern Michigan, four miles north of the Michigan-Ohio border.

Her family came to Michigan in 1835, before it became a state. She walked a mile each way, on a dirt road, to attend school in a one room schoolhouse. She attended Adrian High School and Adrian College. In 1916, she graduated from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, where music and language were her main interests.

She married Everett G. Bird in 1921. He was employed by the Michigan Employment Securities Commission. Everett's father, John, was attorney general of Michigan from 1905-1910, and at the time of his death was chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court.

Muriel and Everett lived in Detroit and then moved to Farmington in 1972. Evert died in 1974 and Muriel became a fixture in downtown Farmington, chatting with friends at the market and visiting with the lunch crowd at Sanders. Still a walker, she walked the mile from her apartment to downtown twice a week.

She moved to Auburn Hills in 1984 to be closer to her daughter, Martha Scrase.
