Leora Louise “Corky” Brady, 83, passed away September 17, 2018 at New Perspective Memory Care in West Fargo.

Corky was born on October 9th, 1934 to Art and Florence (Krause) Karlen. She grew up in rural Hecla, SD and attended a one-room school house in grade school and graduated from Hecla High School (The Hecla Rockets) in 1952. She was salutatorian of her class, played basketball, cheerleader, and was known for her beautiful penmanship. She played the accordion, piano, and trumpet.

On October 10th, 1952 she was united in marriage to Earl at Peace Lutheran Church of Hecla. During Earl’s service in the U.S. Army in Korea and Guam, Corky was employed at the Pfutzenreuter Store in Hecla and later as a secretary for Lahman Mfg. Co. In 1961, Earl and Corky bought their farm near Guelph, N.D. The next few years brought special blessings with the arrival of two adopted children; Michael Earl in 1961 and Brenda Lee in 1963. In 1968 they rented their farm land to neighbors and moved to Oakes.

Corky worked as a secretary at the Oakes Clinic, Rexall Drug, and secretary at Oakes High School for 29 years. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved vegetable and flower gardening, bowling, playing pinochle, reading, and coffee with friends anytime! Her family enjoyed travels to Nebraska and Oregon to visit relatives.

Many of Corky’s loved ones are welcoming her to her heavenly home. Preceding her in death are her husband Earl (2011), her parents, Art and Florence Karlen, sister-in-law, Mary Ann Fischer and brother-in-law, Ben Hansen.
