Details: Memphis National Cemetery was established in 1868 and many soldiers were moved from battlefield cemeteries to Memphis National. Many of these battlefield memorials from the war years were marked with wood markers or other methods that did not survive until the time of their re-interment. In these cases the new burial is appropriately marked with an unknown soldier headstone. There are over 7000 of these burials in this cemetery.
