Of 7900 W Archer Avenue, Willow Springs; daughter of Arthur Atkins (b. Ohio) and Corrina Fitzgibbons (b. Ireland); widow of Edwin H. Kirkland, Sr.

According to his death record, Maud's father was born in Geneva, Ohio, although it is unclear to this researcher whether that means the city in Ashtabula County, or the village in Fairfield County(1). Her mother was born in Ireland on January 12, 1831, and self-reported that she came to the United States that same year, according to the 1900 Census records. There is no definitive record of Corinna in a US Census prior to 1860.

In the aforementioned 1900 US Census, Corinna acknowledged that she had borne eight children, six of whom were still living. Arthur and Corinna's children were: Mary, Kate, Hellen, Sarah, Bertha, Arthur, Paul and Maud. Kate and Hellen both likely passed away prior to 1870, for they no longer appear in the census after 1860. This researcher was unable to locate birth or death records for Kate or Hellen, but there does exist a baptismal record for Hellen from St. Columbkille Catholic Church on Paulina Street(2). 'Helenam Martinem Atkins' was baptized on February 18, 1860. Her date of birth listed in the record is January 30, 1860, and her parents named as 'Arthuris R. Atkins' and 'Brigitae C. Fitzgibbon'. In the 1860 US Census record are:

Arther Atkins M 30 Ohio
Corrina Atkins F 29 NY
Mary Atkins F 5 Ill
Kate Atkins F 4 Ill
Hellen Atkins F 0 Ill

residing in Chicago. Arthur is a sailor(4). We know from all subsequent census records, and from her children's death records, that Corinna was actually born in Ireland. New York may have been her port of entry when she first came to the United States.

The 1870 US Census documents Arthur Atkins, 40, born in Ohio, and his wife Corinna Atkins, 39, born in Ireland, with their children Mary, 16, Sarah, 8, Bertha, 6, Arthur, 4, and Paul, 2, all born in Illinois, residing in Chicago. Arthur had by then gained employment in the marine insurance industry, a position he maintained until his death in 1884, according to his death record(1). By the 1880 US Census, young Maud, our subject, had joined the family, and we find: Arthur Atkins, 50, born in Ohio, B C Atkins, his wife, 49, born in Ireland, and their children, Mary, 25, Sarah, 18, Arthur, 14, Paul, 11, and young Maude, 9, all born in Illinois, still residing in Chicago. Bertha is not included in this census, neither under her maiden nor her married name. Her husband, Theodore Amberg, is also absent from this census, although they do appear in subsequent census records ('Bertha Attkins' and Theodore J. Amberg were married in Chicago on September 7, 1881(5).) The five children named in the 1880 US Census, plus Bertha, who was still living at the time, would be the six surviving children of Corinna Atkins noted in the 1900 US Census.

In addition to Hellen's baptismal record, cited above, baptismal records for at least three other Atkins children at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Chicago survive: Bertha, Sarah and Maud. The baptismal record of 'Bertha Augustine Atkins', baptized on April 3, 1864 with a date of birth noted as March 4, 1864, records Arthur Atkins and 'Corrina Fitzgibbons' as her parents. The death record of 'Bertha Atkins Amberg' also gives a date of birth of March 4, 1864, and names parents 'Arthur Rollins Atkins' and 'Mary Cornnio Fitzgibbons'. This researcher contends that the birth record for 'Bertha Augustine Atkins' and the death record for 'Bertha Atkins Amberg' identify the same individual, and any discrepancies are due to human error.

We know from Arthur's death record that his middle name was 'Rollin', and that he was originally interred at Rose Hill(1). Since Corinna's death record identifies her as 'B. Corinna Atkins', and her place of interment as Calvary(3), we can deduce by comparing the dates in the death records to those inscribed on the memorial monument the identities of the interred. Arthur was likely re-interred, and the headstone erected, sometime after Corinna's death.

Maud and Edwin married in Chicago in 1898. Edwin was a freight agent for the railroad, and their son, Edwin Jr., was born in Ohio. The Kirklands made their home in Fort Wayne, Indiana for most of their married life together. Her husband passed away in 1924, and by 1930, Maud and her son were living in Chicago, where she worked as a social worker, and her son was an engineer with an elevator company.
