Pinkney died of misadventure at the same quarry as his father (National Quarry south of Clear Creek), falling into the cold water and either dying of cold or drowning. He may have suffered a minor heart attack before collapsing.

Fell from a ledge into quarry hole of water and by exposure. An autopsy was held at the Day Funeral Home, with the following results: obstructive and regurtitant mitral valve due to cicatricial changes in mitral valve. No atheroma of the aorta. No fracture of the skull. It was impossible to determine as to the presence or absence of water in the lungs.
