Funeral services for Melva Ruth McClendon, 80, of Lufkin will be held September 14, 2018 in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Old Union Cemetery.

Ms. McClendon was born December 31, 1937 in Lufkin, Texas to the late Ruth (Murray) and Louie Burkett, and died Monday, September 10, 2018 in a local hospice facility. She was a lifelong resident of Lufkin. She enjoyed working at Charlie’s, where she worked for over 30 years. She thoroughly enjoyed all social activities, such as playing bingo, attending church events and visiting with her friends and family. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW and Hillcrest Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Brookshire and husband Claude and Sandra Ortiz and husband Roy; grandchildren, Joshua Smithheart and wife Jody, Lisa Murphy and husband Sean, Lance Ortiz and wife D’Ann, Blake Ortiz and wife Caylan; 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Wilson; brother Mike Burkett and wife Darla; sister-in-law, Rosemary Burkett; “adopted” daughter, Regina Jordan; numerous nieces, nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Jerry Burkett and Donald Burkett; and sister, Betty Berry.
