A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg March 20, 1865, as a private with Co. I, 56th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 1, 1865.
He married Lydia Mathias in 1866 in York and fathered Herbert Howard (b. 03/13/67), Ruhamma (b. 04/25/70 - married Charles E. Yingling), Emma L. (b. @1872 - married Augustus E. Staley), and Alverta (b. 07/03/74 - married Edward F. Dehoff). Cause of death is listed as "chronic Bright's [disease and] "apoplexy" leading to "exhaustion."
