It was a spring morning in 1944 when John and Lydia Adolf were blessed with their second son, Wilford LeRoy Adolf on April 15.

Wil was christened at Hope Church, north of Bethune on July 9, 1944.

Wilford, his older brother Harold, and younger sister Velda were raised on the farm north of Bethune, helping their parents milk cows, shuck feed, farm and gather eggs.

In 1950, Wil started school at Plainview, and with so few kids he was able to skip from fourth to sixth grade.

After eighth grade he transferred to a public school in Bethune. Being a starter in basketball and a pitcher for the baseball team was the highlight.

When driving the kids from the country to Bethune for basketball practice, Wil would get to Bethune, have practice, and if they wanted to drive around a little more, he would unhook the odometer and when back in Bethune ready to go home, hook the odometer back up.

That way when his dad checks the mileage, everything was ok. (Never told his kids about that one.) He graduated from high school in 1961.

Drafting school in Denver, and working at King Soopers, didn't last long and he was back home in Bethune.

Wil worked for Ted Backlund in Burlington as a parts man, then moved on to training horses for Don Merritt, south of Burlington.

This is where he met Don Merritt's cousin by marriage, Nikki Charlene Springer, and fell in love.

They were married on Feb. 7, 1965, at the Calvary Baptist church in Lamar.

They moved back to Bethune where Wil worked for Milbert Beringer.

This is where their first child was born, Charlene Jo on May 17, 1966.

In 1967, Wil changed jobs to work for Ernie Langendoefer on the river. A second child was born, Dawn Marie on Aug. 18, 1968.

In April of 1969, the family moved to Livermore working for the Griffith family.

It was a beautiful ranch back in the mountains, with open pastures and valleys. Wil mostly worked cattle, trained horses, and enjoyed the beautiful view.

This ranch was sold and the family had to pack up and move to Laramie, Wyo.

It was windy, lots of mosquitos, but it still had its benefits, watching wildlife and going to barn dances.

With Wilford's dad being sick they moved back to the homestead in 1972 to help run the farm.

Their third child was born, Stony Lee on May 28, 1973.

Wil was always farming and ranching but included other jobs as well.

He worked at Bethune Grain elevator from 1974 to 1976; 1977 he took on extra jobs at the Stratton sale barn and Burlington sale barn being a ring man for the livestock auctions.

He retired at the end of September 2016 from Burlington Livestock Exchange.

Wilford has always enjoyed extra activities, fishing, and hunting.

Being an active member and deacon of the Hope Congregational Church and especially enjoyed singing and traveling with a group called the Hope Messengers.

They started singing together about the winter of 1979 and developed it into a quartet, where they produced two records and inspired people with their joy of singing.

A member or two might have changed throughout the years but the group stayed together from 1980 to 1987.

Wilford passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Sunday, July 22, 2018.

He is survived by wife Nikki, three children: Charlene (Dennie) Flock, Dawn (Brad) Jackson, Stony.

Six grandchildren, Tyler (Tasha) Flock, Sydney (Luke) Terrell, Cody Adolf, Chayenne Jackson, Christian Adolf; two great-grandchildren, Taya Flock and Cleo Terrell; two siblings: Harold (Marilyn) Adolf and Velda (Raymond) Dobler also survive him.

Wilford was preceded in death by his parents, John S. (4//8/74) and Lydia K. (Stahlecker) (1/21/07) Adolf.

In lieu of flowers and plants, donations can be made to Hope Congregational Church, c/o Mission Fund, 810 North 14th St., Burlington, CO 80807.

Funeral service was held on Friday, July 27, 2018, at Hope Congregational Church near Bethune.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Brown Funeral Home in Burlington.
