YOUNG, II, H. Lane Lane Young passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 12, 2018. Lane was born in Fort Benning, Georgia March 15, 1951, the only child of John Fant Young and Mary Ann Robinson Young. He grew up in Atlanta and attended Georgia Military Academy (now Woodward Academy) where he excelled academically, served as co-captain of the football team his senior year and was elected President of the student body. At graduation, he won the Master Student Award. Lane earned a football scholarship to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A back injury ended his football career, but Lane played intramural sports for his beloved fraternityPhi Delta Theta. Following completion of his undergraduate program with honors, Lane enrolled in the School of Law at the University of Georgia where he graduated with honors in 1976. After a legal clerkship with the Honorable William B. Gunter, Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court, Lane devoted his entire career to practice with the firm Hawkins, Parnell, Thackston & Young LLP where he was a named partner. Lane was a nationally recognized trial lawyer with more than 40 years of experience defending businesses and individuals in complex litigation throughout the United States. He was a courtroom lawyer who tried countless cases to verdict throughout the country, defending a wide range of high-stakes disputes from catastrophic injury and wrongful death to professional liability and commercial matters. Among his many honors and awards, Lane was included on the list of America's Top 100 High Stakes Litigators; honored by Best Lawyers as the Atlanta "Lawyer of the Year" for Legal Malpractice in 2018 and for Professional Malpractice Law in 2015; listed by Best Lawyers in its annual national listing of top attorneys every year for the past 18 years; his peers voted him a Super Lawyer listed by Super Lawyers Magazine every year for the past 14 years; and he was voted as one of the Top 100 Georgia Lawyers in 2007, 2015 and 2018. Lane was a Member Emeritus of the Atlanta Bar Association Board of Directors, a member of the American Bar Association where he served on the Board of Directors of the Litigation Section, the State Bar of Georgia, the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association, the Defense Research Institute, the International Association of Defense Counsel, the West Virginia State Bar, the Old Warhorse Lawyers Club, and the Lawyers Club of Atlanta. Lane was also an active member of the Piedmont Driving Club and Capital City Club. An athlete all of his life, Lane played club rugby and was man avid long-distance runner who completed over 90 full marathons.
