Helen Barbee, 91, formerly of Amarillo, died Saturday, May 5, 2007.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. Winfred Moore, pastor emeritus, and Dr. Chester O'Brien officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.

Mrs. Barbee was born March 7, 1916, in Burnet to Charles and Ellen Joyner. Her father was a Baptist minister and they traveled and moved many times as she grew up. She attended schools in Wellington, Texas with the Class of 1934. She attended two years at Hardin-Simmons University and graduated from Howard Payne University with a degree in education. She later earned her master's degree in special education from West Texas State University.

She married Otha Barbee on Sept. 5, 1940, in Spur and they moved to Amarillo in 1947. She taught school for AISD for 33 years. She taught at Lamar, Ridgecrest and Bivins Elementary.

She touched the lives of many children with her generous spirit. She was a splendorous light to all who knew her. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church where she was a past staff member, sang in the choir for more than 30 years and was active in the WMU.

She assisted her husband in leadership of the Adult 6 Sunday School Department and worked in the children's ministry for many years.

She moved to Largo, Fla., in 2001 to be near her children.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2001.

Survivors include a daughter, Suellen Barbee and husband Doss Stephens of Phoenix; a son, Mark Barbee and wife Susan of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister, Polly Autry of Midland; two grandchildren, Devon Bass and Stacia Warren; and many friends who loved her very much.
