Jay Grant Empey was born on June 27, 1935 in Price, Utah to Claude Jones Empey and Mabel Taylor Empey. He used to love to tell people “I was born and raised in Price Utah!!!" Which demonstrates his love for the outdoors.

He served in the Melbourne, Australia mission and returned to attend and graduate from Brigham Young University. He was married to Betty Ann Tasker and they had three wonderful children Dallas Empey, Derek Empey and Jeni Empey Crosby. They later divorced and he moved his family to California where he was employed by New York Life Insurance Co. He went to work for Sears, Roebuck in Oakland, California as a Controller. Then was transferred to their Alhambra Regional office. While in Oakland he met Sharon Murray Trahant through an introduction by home teachers within their ward per the Bishops instructions, resulting in a wedding and sealing in the Salt Lake Temple and 47 years of a wonderful partnership. After the marriage they then moved to Pasadena California where they raised their combined family including Sharon’s children Mark and Tami Trahant.

In 1985 he was transferred to Sears headquarters in Chicago where he was in the Real Estate Department where he held responsibility for the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii store
development. Upon retiring from Sears they returned to California residing in Manhattan Beach and then later in Ventura, California.

Jay served as a Bishop in the Manhattan Beach Ward and later as the 1st Counselor in the Lawndale Stake Presidency as well as many other callings within the church.

Jay loved the outdoors and when he could he enjoyed hiking, camping, fishing and just relaxing. After a stroke in 1996, Jay and Sharon relocated to Blackfoot, Idaho near family, remaining here for the last 22 years spending time with Sharon, his children, grandchildren and great
grandchildren.

He was very loving and outgoing with all who he met and always carried a warm great smile, which he shared with all those he met in his final employment greeting people at Walmart until he experienced another stroke in 2010.

His joyous countenance, love for life and family, and his warm and caring smile will be missed by all who were blessed to share in his love.

The family is under the care of the Hawker Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the Blackfoot LDS Stake Center. Condolences to the family may be sent at www.hawkerfuneralhome.com.
