Widow of James Whidden Passed Away Suddenly Last Night.
Mrs. Amanda Whidden, widow of the late James Whidden, for more than 50 years a resident of Polk County, died last night about 7 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Beulah Collier on the Bartow Road. Her death was nexpected as Grandma Whidden had been in generally good health in spite of her advanced years, she being nearly 80.
Funeral services were held at the Enterprise church at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon and were attended by many from this city and vicinity who wished to do honor to the memory of the one who had been a pioneer of the county.
James Whidden settled west of the city four or five miles nearly 50 years ago, being one of the first white men to make a home so far out of Bartow.
In that day the Seminoles were still living in that section, Old Chief Tawhuska and his band being residents at the south end of Lake Pierce. The Whiddens went through the vicissitudes of pioneer life. Five children survive her, her husband having passed on about eight years ago. The children are Noah Whidden, Jack Whidden, Mrs. Beulah Collier, Mrs. Amy Griffin, Mrs. Amanda Tucker, all living in this city or this vicinity.
There are many grandchildren and great-grand children.
Mrs. Whidden was a fine example of the old time Christianity, having lived a consecrated life for many years. Hundreds of friends and acquaintances, knowing of her life, feel certain that she has gone to a reward in Heaven.
