Dr. Watkins A. Broyles spent more than 50 years as a country doctor in Harrison County.
He fought in two world wars and even served on the Mexican border with U.S. troops fighting Pancho Villa and his revolutionary gang.
Now Dr. Broyles has embarked upon a second career – that of an author. The retired Bethany physician is putting the finishing touches on a massive biography about his life as a family practitioner and as a soldier.∼Born in Table Rock, Nebraska, moved to Bethany, Missouri in 1900 with family. Was a member of the Missouri National Guard called to active duty during the Mexican border skirmish of 1916, then an Infantry officer in WWI. Was wounded in France and listed as dead but returned home to continue his life. Graduated from KU medical school in 1924 and practiced in Eagleville, Missouri. He was married in 1917 to Ethyl Swan and two children were born to this union. He moved his practice to Bethany, Missouri and during WWII entered military service for the third time as a medical doctor as a front line surgeon. Married for a second time in 1947 to Marjorie Frances (Paton)Fralka and adopted her two sons. Continued to live and work in the Bethany Area until his death in 1988 at age 93.
