June Carolyn Dahl Aanestad 88, died peacefully at her home in Sonoma, CA, September 5, 2007 after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by some of her children, grandchildren, hospice and clergy. She leaves behind a legacy of love and family devotion. There but for the Grace of God goes she.

Born in Fertile, MN, to Ada Elizabeth Opheim Dahl, homemaker and Hilbert Stephen Dahl, professor of music and voice teacher, she carried on the family tradition and became the first singer for the Lee Baron Big Band in the early 1940's. After her marriage to Dr. Robert W. Aanestad they moved to S.F., CA, where June raised seven children. She spent her lifetime caring for others; she cared for her aging father for years until his death; she raised a granddaughter and took care of her cousin, Marguerite Koxvold Moore, later in life when she resettled in Sonoma, CA, in 1986. Soon most of her children followed. In Sonoma, June volunteered at the Sonoma Valley Hospital Women's Auxiliary for over five years, as well as the As Is Shop for several years. June was a staunch republican with strong family values. She defined the term compassionate conservative by always listening to others and loving people for who they were, not who she wanted them to be.

She is survived by daughters, Karin Morrison (and partner, Harvey Whitehill), Kathy Aanestad (and partner, Veda Lewis), Nancy Strongin (and husband, David Strongin), Susan Aanestad and son, Erik Aanestad; grandchildren, Phillip Morrison, Christina, Robert and Paul Aanestad and Joseph, Sarah and Perry Abouata; sister-in-law, Dorothy Porter and her children Al (and wife, Junelle), Brad and Abbie (and husband, Wayne Balland); nephew, Paul Barth and cousin, Arlene Dahl. June's husband Dr. Robert W. Aanestad; sons, Robert Paige and James Stephen Aanestad and sister, Sylivia Brown her only sibling, predeceased her.

"And then, what is grace? Grace is love. But grace is not love simply and purely and alone. Grace and love are in their innermost essence, one and the same thing." Alexander Whyte. June will be deeply missed.

Private Memorial Services will be held Saturday, September 22 at 11 a.m. at the family home. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at the First Congregational Church, 252 West Spain Street, Sonoma, CA 95476 on October 7 at 2 p.m. Donations may be made in her name to, Hospice by the Bay, 190 West Napa Street, Sonoma, CA 95476.
