He was born Aug. 10, 1903, in the town of Winneconne, the son of Ferdinand and Ida Ginnow Volp. He married Helen Zuehlke June 6, 1928, in Oshkosh.
Al was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie No. 267, and the Oshkosh Tavern League.
He was brought up on a farm and had worked on a milk route for several years, when he bought a filling station on Algoma Boulevard and also had a refreshment stand. After five years he decided to go into the tavern business and built the tavern where he remained for 53 years. He retired June 30, 1986, at 83 years of age, regretfully leaving the friends and customers he has served for so many years. He loved people, which is the reason he kept on working long after most people would have retired.
Survivors include his wife, Helen, of Oshkosh; one daughter, Maurene (Earl) Christensen of Oshkosh; two grandchildren, Jeffrey (Sharlene) Christiansen of Oshkosh and Susan (Michael) Harnois of Waterloo, Iowa; four great-grandchildren, Kimberly and Kyle Christensen of Oshkosh and David and Andrew Harnois of Waterloo, Iowa. Al was survived by numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 7, in St. Paul's United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Kent Mosebach officiating. Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the church.
Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park.
