He was the son of William and Lucy (Burgess) Stickney. On 7 July 1863 he married Harriet Champion, the daughter of Henry and Sarah Jane (Whittlesey) Champion. Austin's last years were spent in Paris, where he died. His wife died 18 Feb 1915. Their children were Lucy Madeline (18 Jul 1866), Eliza Trumbull (13 Oct 1868), Joseph Trumbull (20 Jun 1874), and Henry Austin (13 May 1879).
