JOHN BORTZFIELD, was born in Wayne county, Indiana, in 1842, and enlisted from Mason county. He had been a farmer, served through all the campaigns to Resaca, Ga., where he was slightly wounded. At Peach Tree creek, Georgia, July 19, 1864, he was wounded in the right leg and was discharged for wounds, February 7, 1865.

John Henry Bortzfield enlisted in the 85th Illinois Infantry on 24 July 1862 and served with them until he was discharged on 7 Feburary 1865 as a result of wounds he received during the Battle of Peach Tree Creek. He received a disability pension of $10.00 a month until later years. At the time of his death in 1922 he was receiving $50.00 a month.
